VA Community Care Credentialing: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a VA Community Care provider?

Most community providers join the VA Community Care Network (CCN) through a third-party administrator. Optum runs CCN Regions 1-3 and TriWest runs Regions 4-5, which include Alaska. Find your region on VA’s CCN page, contact that administrator to request a contract, complete its credentialing, and sign the network agreement. In some cases VA can instead offer a Veterans Care Agreement directly through the local VA medical center.

Who administers the VA Community Care Network in my region?

Optum administers Regions 1, 2 and 3, and TriWest Healthcare Alliance administers Regions 4 and 5. VA’s Community Care Network page lists which states fall in each region and gives the contact details for each administrator.

Do I need a referral to treat veterans under Community Care?

Yes. Veterans must be eligible and have an approved VA referral (authorization) before you provide care under CCN, except for urgent care at network urgent care sites. Claims for care without a valid referral are typically denied.

How long does it take to join VA CCN?

It varies by region and provider type. Plan for 60-120 days for contracting and credentialing with Optum or TriWest, and longer if documents are missing or your CAQH profile isn’t up to date.
